Parenting with vulnerability is a challenge, no matter who you are or how long you’ve been a dad. It can feel awkward, and you may worry that you’re doing something wrong or hurting your child. But if you’re a sensitive dad who wants to help his kids become resilient, the best thing to do is be vulnerable with them.

Being able to share your own struggles and fears will let your children know that you’re someone they can trust. It will also give them a model for communicating openly with you about difficult feelings like disappointment or anger, which is an important part of emotional regulation and managing vulnerability.

Parents who can talk openly about their own emotions and experiences can encourage their teens to do the same, fostering a healthy connection that will allow them to develop a robust emotional toolkit to navigate life’s challenges. In turn, this will help them to be resilient and confident in their own abilities when faced with vulnerabilities.

A new frame needs to move beyond the labeling of risk and vulnerability to identifying what people need to do well within their lives, families, and contexts. It will also enable us to develop solutions that are respectful of the intertwined and bi-directional nature of family experiences rather than hierarchically positioning one outcome over another.
