Volunteer Victory: How Football Encourages Volunteer Participation

In this context it is vital to understand how volunteers are engaged and motivated to volunteer for their local club or event. Previous research on general volunteering motives has shown that they are multifaceted and can vary across different individuals and over time. Adolescents, for example, cited developmental motivations such as wanting to discover their strengths, learn a new skill or expand on knowledge of basketball, whilst adults tended to cite ‘values’ and ‘career’ motivations.

Furthermore, this study found that adolescents’ and adults’ commitment to returning to COVID-19-safe basketball was impacted by a range of concerns including: social distancing requirements; the logistics of organising training schedules or competitions within government density limits; and assuming new roles/responsibilities such as the appointment of a bio-safety officer. These findings have important implications for volunteer recruitment, management and retention programmes that rely on these individuals.
